Luang Prabang, Laos

Tree of Life mosaic on the back of the temple at Wat Xieng Thong is located on the northern tip of the peninsula of Luang Phrabang, Laos. Quite beautiful. It was built in 1560 by King Setthathirath and was under royal patronage during the Kingdom of Laos. Like the royal palace, the wat (temple) was placed near the mekong.

Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage site so it is a well preserved town caught in a time warp. It is so peaceful and slow you think you have been transported to another world. The mixture of Lao and French Colonial architecture is wonderful and thrown several dozen temples in a town you can walk around in half a day, set along the river, it really is quite spectacular. The Hmong hill tribe market at night is the perfect end to the day where you can wander through the stalls where earthing is laid out on the floor and bargain for scarves, purses, handbags, snakes preserved in bottles, opium pipes, and many more interesting items. Fruit shakes (watermelon, banana, papaya, lemon, etc.) and baguettes are also on offer.
