The old city of Sukhothai

This morning we went to see the beautifully preserved and maintained temples in the old walled city. It is about 8 miles from the new city where we stayed, so we took a songtaew to the ruins. A songtaew is a little like a very small pick up truck with bench seats and a roof with a diesel engine. Pretty noisy and smelly, but it gets you where you want to go for cheap. Our driver, Narin, was a great guide and took us to the perfect temples. Wat Mahathat was amazing, the largest temple in the group, with multiple Buddha statues and columns, along with the most stunning lotus ponds. We also visited Wat Si Chum with a giant seated Buddha housed within very close walls, and vey hard to photograph. Most of the Buddha hands had gold leaf on the which glowed in the light. There are also multiple offerings at the statues of insence and lotus flowers, along with marigolds and smaller Buddha statues.
